Volunteer Opportunities
Do you or your student love theatre? Do you love working with costumes? Do you love to organize? Would you like to become involved on or off the stage? Would you like to see shows for free?
The Wichita Theatre is looking for volunteers to help in many ways! Many of our home school teens are involved at the theatre.  We need ushers, concession workers (food handler card required), and lots of help on and off the stage.

I am looking to build a volunteer group that come in once a month to help organize our costume rooms. If you are interested in this or any of the above areas please contact me. Thanks!

US History
American Literature
US HISTORY

This group of students will use Notgrass Exploring America link to learn about US History.  There are 4 required lessons to be read and associated questions to be answered each week. The students will be required to read additional books as a part of this course.  One book of the student's (or parent's) choice, with an accompanying book report, a week.  I will check work before class to see if it was done, not to correct it.

Each class will address different aspects of American History.  We will go to the art museum and learn about different American artists and genres.  Regularly, we will have a sing along in order to learn about the rich musical traditions of our country.  I am inviting Americans from different cultures to speak to our class about their culture and their American experience.  We will be watching videos, either movie or lesson, for a visual learning experience.  Also, monthly we will play some board games to reinforce/learn US History or geography. Sometimes we will go on field trips to enhance our learning experience.

Ages: Both of my sons are taking this class.  Caleb is 15 and Malachi is/will be 13.  You can see what the curriculum looks like by following the link above in order to decide if your student is able to participate.

If a student has not accomplished the work for the week they may not attend the class on Friday.  Three times of not accomplishing the work I will ask that your student not continue with the class.  Vacations, illness, etc. will not count in this 3 strike rule.  I am doing a large amount of work to prepare for this class.  It is respectful of my preparation time and participating time that students come to class prepared.

Chemistry In Action

This group of students will be using the curriculum Dive into Chemistry taught by Dr. David Shorman in order to accomplish a Christian based, rigorous and challenging chemistry course. Link to curriculum. The students will accomplish designated work at home during the week and then (usually) meet on Fridays at 1 p.m. with other students working through the same curriculum.

This group will be a bit different as we will be using our time to see chemistry in action.  Using what the students are learning during the week, we will go visit a business, receive a speaker or watch a related video that is actually using what they well be learning about.  Sometimes we will accomplish hands on labs.

I will check that the work from the week has been accomplished.  The student may not participate that week unless the work is completed.  Checking for correct answers will not be my job.

P.S. While the content of this course will prepare your student to take either the A.P. or CLEP tests your student will not be required to take either test.  Although, my son will be preparing for and taking the chemistry CLEP and would like someone to go with him.  There is separate software that helps review and prepare for those tests.

TEEN BOOK CLUB - American Literture

Open invitation to any teens wishing to participate in a monthly literature/art club focusing on works in American history. You do NOT have to currently be studying American History, I'm just trying to make my life easier by picking and discussing books my children are already reading.

What we'll read-
September-The Scarlet Letter
October- Selected Works of Poe and Frost
November- Red Badge of Courage
January-Up From Slavery
February- Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man
March-To Kill A Mockingbird
April- Fahrenheit 451

There are study guides available from Smarr publishers for some of these if you'd like to have your children do them. They are not required by me, just something extra if you'd like. You can also find many of these on audio if you'd like to listen along as you read. Sometimes, I find it helps with comprehension in my kids if we read out loud or listen to someone else read as we read.

I do not have a day/time for meeting picked yet. I thought we could figure that out together? I'll set up a poll over on the book club loop http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WAR_bookclub/ and see what works best for the most people.

Ages- I'm not going to be super strict about the ages. I am going to say this. I know some very young people are very good readers and can completely comprehend the classics. I am also going to be completely honest with you as a parent and tell you that some of these books have adult content in them. Adultery, rape, suicide and the occasion swear word. Nothing like evening network television (and definitely nowhere near as detailed!), but it's there. If you know me at all, you know all discussion will be filtered through the Gospel, but these books have been chosen with the intent of my college bound child reading and discussing them in an environment designed to give her practice in literary discussions before going to college. I just don't want someone to send an advanced reading elementary student into the room unaware...

Field trips!! The resource director at the Amon Carter Museum is working up something special for me but due to a family emergency she's not finished with it yet so I don't have any details. I'll let you know as soon as I know something. :)

Kathleen
American Literature
beginning Feb. 3

The spine of this course will be the Research and Education Association American Literature course. The students will NOT be reading entire works of literature, but will be reading pieces and parts similar to what they would do in traditional literature classes. This is an in depth look at the authors' view
of the breadth of American Literature.

Students will be required to do a lot of research and use 3x5 note cards to write up their findings. In class we will review what they have found, discuss
opinions, think about what they consider literature and why they hold their opinion. There will be no reports or papers required.

American Literature will not be an easy course and will require a lot of work. Your student will be exposed to people, and their life styles, that you probably do not agree with. I will be the first to say, many of the books considered "literature" are attempts to be "different" from the writing of the day.
