Fun Things to Do in Texoma
From Teresa Berkshire

Community resources…

From Jean Hall –

1.  We have a small art museum, free to the public.  I don’t frequent it but do show up for an occasional special event.  They run art camps in the summer.  Swans grace the lake next to it.

2.  We have the River Bend Nature Center situated next to the waterfall  which features nature trails, classes, special events, and a new butterfly sanctuary.

3.  We have a lovely hiking/jogging/biking trail around Lake Wichita.  If you go early in the morning, you can spot a few dozen rabbits and rodents, and the occasional snake, armadillo or bobcat.  The bobcat has only shown his face once that I know of.  The paved trail is 6 miles long, so out-and-back makes a pleasant 12 mile bike ride.  It gets a bit more crowded right before the big bike race, but not the rest of the year.

4.  We have the Kell House museum, a 100 year house build by one of the city’s founders.  It’s the headquarters for our local historical society.  Our homeschool drama club has a long relationship with them, doing plays at special events like the Christmas Santa House and the 4th of July celebration.  Drama and history combine well.

5.  We have the Kemp Center for the Arts which features many local artists, runs art classes, and hosts special events.  Our homeschool choir and music classes met there.  Some of our hobby stores run regular arts/crafts classes for learning new skills like cake decorating.

6.  We have a municipal auditorium and a multi-purpose events center which both host concerts.  We enjoy the military band concerts, and we thoroughly enjoyed a special Halloween symphony orchestra concert last year.  The local symphony sometimes offers free tickets to students with reduced price tickets for the teacher, and the Halloween performance was one that we took advantage of.  The MPEC also regularly features dog shows, cat shows, gun and knife shows, craft shows, etc., plus hockey games and touring ice skating shows.

7.  Downtown, we proudly present you with the “World’s Smallest Skyscraper.”  You have to see it to believe it, but the story behind it is good, and it makes a great lesson in marketing for your kids. LOL It’s worth a field trip.

8.  Also downtown is the small but interesting North Texas History Museum.  I believe they have an colorful seashell exhibit right now, and a WWII exhibit as well.

9.  I can’t leave out the Wichita Theatre, a 100 year old auditorium full of character and home to a family friendly community theatre.  Many hs kids here are active in the theatre, auditioning for roles and volunteering backstage.  They run drama camps in the summer and drama “academies” during the school year.

10.  There’s a ceramic art store where you can paint and fire lovely ceramics.

11.  The City Parks and Rec department hosts a free outdoor concert series each year and a bluegrass festival, among other special events and classes.   The Caribbean steel drum concerts enchant me.

12.  If you want animal related field trips, the humane society and the Whispers of Hope therapeutic horse farm offer hands-on opportunities.

13.  A few berry-picking farms in the area offer seasonal field trips that are memorable, not to mention lovely photo opps.

14.  A number of 4H clubs offer countless educational events, projects, competitions, and training activities.  4H is free to join, and once you’re a member you can pick and choose what projects or classes or competitions to join, including food and nutrition, project show, consumer education, sewing, drama, shooting, dog training, livestock, leadership training, and countless others opportunities.

15.  Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Campfire offer different opportunities, although I’m not personally familiar with them.

Littlest Sky Scraper
511 Seventh St
Wichita Falls, TX 76301
It started out innocently enough, but then most swindles do.  In 1919, Wichita Falls was a crowded place. While area businessmen were enjoying the first of several region-wide oil booms, offices were located wherever space could be found, and "coat pocket" business addresses were as common as anything made of bricks and mortar. Investors practically stood in line to buy stock in a construction project proposed by a Philadelphia building engineer, the plain-looking tenant of the Newby Hotel, a man whose given name has been lost to history. He probably was a genuine building engineer or he could never have presented his $200,000 (c. 1919) project so convincingly! Contracts were signed, money changed hands and construction began on the lot next door to the clever visionary's hotel address. Trouble was, none of the investors seemed to notice that the Philadelphian's blueprints, which called for dimensions measured in square feet, were actually executed in square inches until after the property, still standing after 80-plus years, was finished.  By then, the Easterner had long checked out of the hotel, taking the bulk of his ill-gotten $200,000 along. (A quaint antique shop, Antique Wood, now calls The Littlest Skyscraper its home.)

Memorial Auditorium
1300 7th
Wichita Falls, TX 76301
The last area Indian battle had been fought only 10 years before on the bluff where Memorial Auditorium now stands.  Built in the late 1920's, in the early days, Will Rogers chewed gum, twirled ropes and performed on our stage along with Al Jolsen, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Duke Ellington, Ethel Barrymore, Helen Keller, Gene Autry and Bob Hope. Today, the Judds, Reba McEntire, Randy Travis, George Strait, Ricky Van Shelton and Garth Brooks have frequented our city. These current stars' double sellouts were matched by a double sellout of the national tour of the famous Broadway show Cats. Memorial Auditorium is proudly situated in a market in North Texas-Southern Oklahoma available to a population of over a quarter million people. Our attractive and comfortable auditorium serves a public within a 100-mile radius of Wichita Falls. It is our highest priority to provide both the public and visiting artists and promoters with the finest service possible. We are happy to advise interested parties in choosing the most appropriate performance dates and to assist in publicity plans, press conferences and ticket planning.

Call Field Memorial Museum
4515 Jacksboro Hwy
Wichita Falls, TX 76302
Currently open 1st Saturday of each month only, 10am-Noon; Free
Call Field was one of only 5 airbases in the state of Texas during World War I. The airbase was located on either side of present day Call Field Road in southwest Wichita Falls. Its dirt runways were located in what is now the University Park Subdivision. Call Field was closed and dismantled in the early 1920s, but it laid the groundwork for establishing Wichita Falls as America's premier city for training of its military pilots and support personnel at Sheppard Air Force Base. Housed here is "The Jenny", perhaps the most famous and important airplane in American aviation history and rightfully credited with "putting the United States into the air." The City of Wichita Falls purchased this rare (only one of approximately five still in flying condition) "Jenny" to be used as the centerpiece of the Museum. Hundreds of "Jenny's" from Call Field filled the skies of Wichita Falls during 1917 & 1918.

Wichita Falls, TX One of the most historically and architecturally significant buildings in Wichita Falls, this Museum features original family furnishings, textiles, decorative arts and historic costumes. Frank Kell, long considered a visionary and driving force behind the growth of the city, moved to Wichita Falls in 1896 at the urging of his brother-in-law, Joseph Kemp. The two men were involved in the grain industry, the development of Lake Wichita, utility companies, the newspaper, streetcar system, the railroad, the local college and more! In 1909, Mr. Kell purchased land overlooking downtown and built a home for his family. It was purchased and restored by the Wichita County Heritage Society and the Museum opened in 1981.
