Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
Fossil Rim is a leader in propagation and management programs, scientific research, diverse public education initiatives and training facilities for conservation professionals, and support of conservation programs worldwide. The animals at Fossil Rim, with the exception of the carnivores, rhinos and a few others, are free to roam on ~1,700 acres of Central Texas hill country savannas and juniper-oak woodlands.
Our Mission
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is dedicated to conservation of species in peril, scientific research, training of professionals, creative management of natural resources, and impactful public education. Through these activities we provide a diversity of compelling learning experiences which invoke positive change in the way people think, feel and act environmentally.
Our History
Until a quarter century ago, Fossil Rim was known as Waterfall Ranch, a 1,400 acre wild game ranch.
In the early 80s it began propagation of endangered species. Grevy's Zebra, African addax, and eventually, cheetah and African scimitar-horned oryx were included in the preservation efforts.
In just a few years, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center has been restored from its own near extinction to one of the most progressive conservation and education centers in the United States

More to do in Abilene!
If you make it to Abilene and you have little ones, we really recommend the Abilene Zoo. They are a small zoo (can look at it all in about an hour if your kids are little) but they have some neat stuff - you walk up a bridge and can feed the giraffes from their eye level. And, it is the cheapest zoo I've ever been to. We always go when we are in Abilene.
Also, if you make it to Abilene, they have a small museum called Grace Museum that has a really cool hands on section for the kids. When we went last they had some neat science related stuff, a life size Operation game, an ambulance they could climb around in, a really cool section for the little ones (looks like a tree they can climb up into and some neat wooden looking blocks to build with) and the ever popular crazy 70's room with lights and music. This is all on one floor, and you can see all of your kids at the same time from almost anywhere in the room. When we went it was free on Thursday evenings after 5. If you plan a field trip just right, we could hit Frontier Texas, the Zoo, and the museum in one day and have some worn out kids for the ride home. Can you tell we have family in Ablene? :)
