Girls' Book Club

Girls' Book Club is for home school girls, ages 4-8.  We meet on the 2nd  and 4th  Thursdays each month from 1:30-3:30pm at Mardel to enjoy each other's company and a good book! The club is a co-operative effort with each participant's family taking a turn to host a meeting. Each meeting consists of the host reading a book, as well as providing a craft and a snack related to the theme of the books. This school year we are following the book list in Five in a Row, vol. 2.

ALERT

The ALERT Cadet program was started in 1996 as outgrowth of the ALERT (Air/Land Emergency Resource Team) program, with the vision to raise up godly young men who would be "Strong to Overcome" the evil one (1 John 2:13) and be mighty in spirit. We desire to turn the hearts of the fathers to the sons and the hearts of sons to their fathers (Malachi 4:6). The ALERT Cadet program is a tool which a wise father can use to assist him in raising up godly sons.

The Texas 10th Charlie Unit is composed of fathers and sons from the Texoma area.  Our scheduled meetings are on the second Tuesdays at 6-8 pm and the the last Saturday at 5-7 pm each month. In addition to our regular meetings we also plan and carryout activities together as a unit on a regular basis; such as field trips, camping, hiking, and hands-on skill trianing.  You can contact Jerry Stevens at 761-1417 or look at www.alertcadet.org for more information.

Robotics - Mall Date: Mid-October & Competition Date: End of October

HEAT’s robotics club (Maniacs Attempting Robot Science) offers students from 6th through 12th grade an opportunity to compete in the national science and engineering competition sponsored by BEST, Inc (www.bestinc.org).  Each fall, BEST challenges the students to build a remote controlled robot which can complete a specific mission in a limited time in an exciting, sports-style tournament.  Students develop teamwork, creativity, sportsmanship and problem-solving skills as they learn about technology and the engineering process.  The club is busy from August through October, with little activity the rest of the year.

Here is the website for the local Robotics Club - www.wfmars.com

It's that time of year again:
to brainstorm, design, strategize, build, and program (and then tweak the design, strategy, and build/programming) of a robot!  Here is the teaser video for this year's competition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRRnjETXOFc.  The theme this year is "BUGS."

Who can participate?  Any student from 6th - 12th grade.  We want as many who are interested in any aspect of the competition to join the team!  Even if your child doesn't love robots, the team definitely has an area that will fit with their talents and skills.  We need team members to share the task!

What will the students do?  It depends upon the student's time commitment and interests.  The thing I love best about BEST is that it is cross curricular like the real world.  Students on the team write an MLA research paper and many other papers to document what the team does over the 6-week period.  Some members are in charge of PR/media, and other members take photos and videos of the team's work.  The team builds a website, designs t-shirts to wear for the competition, and gives an oral presentation about their robot and team to judges at the game day competition.  The team builds a display (similar to a sales booth in an expo only with no sales) to showcase their team, robot, and work.  There is even a need for cheering!

All that, and we haven't even gotten to the part about robots!  At the kick-off event on September 17th, the students are given a game-style situation (or task) for their robot to complete and are sent a lot of robot parts.  For the game's task, sometimes it includes robots competing in the same game field; at other times, the robots have separate game fields.  Each team has to design a robot that will fit their team's strategy for the current year's competition.  Some of the students learn C and/or Easy C to program the robot.  The controller used is a gaming style of controller.  Some students get to drive the robot on game day, others help with the oral presentation, some run the display booth, everyone cheers, and some do multiple jobs on game day.

What is the schedule? This is the competition schedule: http://www.ntbest.org/schedule.htm, but there will be many hours devoted to the 6-week project.  There are a number of different "hubs" (or regional level competitions) that compete, and a couple of teams from each hub can move on to compete at the state level competition.  Those who actually help drive the robot will be busy, but it is only for short time!  Unless the team advances to the state level of competition, the season is over on October 29th.

For more information about the competition, please check the BEST website: http://www.bestinc.org/ and our hub's website: http://www.ntbest.org/.  I will invite you to the robotics team's website if you are interested.

Thanks!

Julie

4-H A.C.T. Group

What is A.C.T.?
We are a 4-H club dedicated to searching out and/or providing opportunities for children in the Wichita Falls area to express themselves through performing arts, live theatre, and community service.  In 4-H circles we’re known as a “non-traditional” or “specialty” club because we focus on a single area of 4-H activities.

When does A.C.T. meet?
We don’t have regular monthly meetings.  Basically, when we have an activity, we put out a call and invite kids to join in.  If you want to be involved in that activity, you come to that meeting/rehearsal/fundraiser.

How will I know about these activities?
We announce them on our Yahoo email loop and on our Facebook page.

What are some examples of A.C.T. activities?
A.C.T. partners with the Kell House to provide volunteers for community service.  With them, we do the Santa House, the Roll and Stroll Day, the Riverside Cemetery Tour, and the community 4th of July celebration.  Some years we’ve produced full length plays (Importance of Being Earnest, 101 Dalmatians), individual scenes (Midsummer Night’s Dream) or one-act plays (Hank the Cowdog).  We’ve dabbled in summer drama camps and Share the Fun performances.

Who are the club leaders?
Jean Hall and Tara Swagerty co-mange A.C.T.  We both check email obsessively.  jimandjean@sw.rr.com and queenygirltara@gmail.com.

BAND

Dear Parents,
We enjoyed meeting so many of you and working with your children on the various instruments at the picnic and meeting Thursday evening.  There is still time to enroll in the Wichita Falls Home School band that will meet on Tuesdays from 10:15 - 11:45 at Lamar Baptist Church.
   1.  If you weren't able to be at the meeting last week, but would still be interested in having your children try out the different instruments, please call us and we will arrange a time to meet.
   2.  If you need help finding an instrument, we have used instruments that are available to lease purchase on a monthly payment that you can set based on your finances or we can recommend some of the music stores.
   3.  If you already have a used instrument that you would like us to check over, please contact us.
   4.  If you have any other questions, please contact us and we would be glad to visit with you.
